Class 1
Discuss what makes a painting “good”. What draws someone to a piece- palette, composition, light and contrast.
Quick slideshow of beautiful paintings (focusing on portraits), and a range of styles.
Look at the reference photos students brought in. Out of their options, together we will select which will make the best painting.
Quick how-to for those who have never used oil paint: talk about various mediums and textures of paint. Talk about the colors found in skin.
Dive in and begin: Emphasizing to first pinpoint the areas of light/dark. Paintings will start as a mass of light and shadow, and then will sharpen over time as more detail is added.
Class 2
Talk about glazes - adding very thin layers of paint mixed with medium to add contrast, once a surface is already dried.
Quick demonstration, and then carry on with a free flow work class with Josie there to help and answer questions.
At the end of the class we will have a brief progress critique of each other’s works. Will be a positive environment!
Class 3
Look at more paintings. Talk about backgrounds and contrast, and how warm/cool tones can either make a subject pop out of the painting or pull them back.
Continue with a free flow work class with Josie there to help and answer questions.
At the end of class we have another critique.
