ABOUT GALERIE SHIBUMI

Galerie Shibumi is a Black- and woman-owned contemporary art gallery committed to creating space for emerging artists whose practices reflect the urgency, complexity, and beauty of our times. Founded in 2024 and now located in Midtown Manhattan, the gallery exists as both a curatorial platform and a site of dialogue—dedicated to artists whose perspectives have been historically underrepresented in the mainstream art world.

Our curatorial focus centers on artists from diverse cultural, racial, and disciplinary backgrounds—many of whom come to art through unconventional paths. We believe that these distinct trajectories offer critical insight into contemporary life and expand our collective understanding of what art can be and do.

The name Shibumi, a Japanese term meaning “effortless beauty,” reflects the gallery’s guiding philosophy: a belief in the power of subtlety, restraint, and authenticity. We are drawn to work that resists spectacle in favor of resonance—work that unfolds over time, challenges normative narratives, and contributes to an evolving cultural conversation.

In a moment defined by social upheaval, economic uncertainty, and cultural fragmentation, Galerie Shibumi positions itself as a necessary space for reflection, expression, and visibility. Through exhibitions, public programs, and community partnerships, we aim to cultivate a space where artists and audiences alike can engage deeply—with each other, and with the world we share.
